Food

We started solids this past weekend and Ava has proved she is a Wong. She is now 5.5 months (people start solids between 4-6 months) and she's been showing a few signs that she's ready -- lunging forward at the opportunity to put something in her mouth, watching us eat/drink, nursing for a long time. I'm eating 4-6 meals (not snacks) a day now and feeling completely wiped out.

We started on Saturday 30 Oct so Peter could be involved. He fed her at 11am & 6pm (baby rice which is a powder you mix with milk; tastes like breast milk). On Sunday evening, we introduced carrot. I wish I took a picture of her face. It was the first time she had a completely new taste in her mouth (aside from the dirt & dust she picks up when dry flying on the floor). She looked shocked with a bit of fear ("what is this?!?!?!"), but we were cheering & smiling so she just started smiling ("not sure what all the excitement is about, but I'm going to join in!").

Peter's a much better feeder. Probably all the experience he has feeding himself (since he seems to eat 10 times more than the average human). She has recently learned to blow her lips to make a sound like a motorcycle. It's cute, but not when she decides to do it during solids. yes, that means about 30% actually gets eaten, 30% falls out of her mouth on her bib, and another 30% gets blown off the back end of the spoon and sometimes in my face.

I gave her broccoli once (she didn't really care for it) and later pear (which she likes, probably because it is sweet). Surprisingly, she likes Zucchini and dislikes Sweet Potato (probably because that is all I ate during the pregnancy once we found out I had gestational diabetes!) Since it is healthier and cheaper, I'm making the food -- boiling, blending, and freezing. We'll see how long that lasts. Anyways, you can definitely tell she is getting chubbier with solids. It's also helping her sleep thru the night better.

LOVE this picture. This is after the Zucchini. I love that she has a piece under her nose (not a buger).

This was after broccoli. Not a very flattering picture of Ava, but it looks like she is loving it (I don't think this was actually the case).
With the start of solids, Ava's taking putting things in her mouth to a whole new level. I let her kick around without the diaper before her bath. Sometimes she has both feet in her mouth.

First Bite on video:

When we first put the spoon up to her mouth, she went cross-eyed watching the spoon come towards her. I was trying to get that on video, but wasn't as successful. You'll have to watch closely. She doesn't do this anymore.
