Tour of the Hospital

Peter and I went yesterday for a tour of the Birthing Center (where all the natural births take place) and the Labor Ward (more of the medical births -- epidurals, forceps, and C-sections).

The birthing center is really nice and homey, with the birthing balls, pools, and other gadgets to assist with the natural births. Doesnt feel like a hospital. The rooms are private, with beds, flat screen tvs, bathrooms/showers attached to each room. This is run by the midwives for all the low-risk/straight forward births. Advantage -- your husband gets to stay over night with you. Disadvantage -- you can only stay for 24 hrs then you get sent home.

The labor ward is very medical. While it is a top training/education hospital, the building is quite old. Advantage -- you get to stay in the hospital 2-5 days after birth. Unfortuantely, there are many downsides - rooms are shared between 2-6 ppl, your husband cannot stay the night as visiting hrs are only b/w 8am-8pm, there is a crappy TV, the showers/toilets are shared in a common hallway, and it is super hot in the building. Now we can pay extra money to upgrade to stay afterwards in the private side of the hospital (private rooms, peter can stay over, etc)... but we did find out that it is like 1,000 GBP/$1500 a night (crazy!!!). This is sad times bc one of my friends hospitals (UCLH) was about 330/$500 GBP a night (Expensive, but entertainable).

Anyways, I find out tomorrow whether Baby Girl Wong is head down, breech, or transverse... which will begin to determine whether I have an opportunity to delivery naturally or if I'll have to schedule a C-section.

Keep you posted!
